Recce Shots

Megan took screenshots of the area around her house, which we will be using to shoot our video in.
We will be shooting at night, so it will look darker than it does in these images. We thought this area would be quite good to use, as it is local to everyone involved in the production of the video (including both camera crew and cast). This area is just a typical street, with the crooked pavements and run down buildings. We wanted the feel of our video to be quite urban to link in with our songs genre.

Contacting the car parks...

What we wrote to the Car park in Bexleyheath:

Me and three of my classmates from Welling School Sixth Form, thought it would be nice to film part of our A-level music video in a car park. We thought that the car park in Royal Oak Road North road , Bexleyheath , DA6 7HG, would be a perfect location for this. We were advised to request permission to film there, rather than just turn up. We are happy to pay for a car park space, as we will be using a car in the video also. We hope to hear back, about whether or not we will be able to do this.

Digipak rough draft

In my free lesson today I created a hand drawn version of my Digipak. On the front I used the silhouettes of four women as my main image. I put the 'Studded Roses' logo at the top left of the front cover, and I've made it slightly smaller than the album title. I placed the album title at the bottom right corner of the digipak as I thought this was a common theme to how digipak's are laid out. On the inside cover, I decided to keep it simple with a plain black background, with a big red rose in the middle. Also, for the CD I featured the Album name taking up most of the space, and two of the four silhouettes from the front cover. On the back cover, I am keeping this simple too by keeping a plain black background, with a red rectangle for where the song names will go. This will be slightly translucent instead of a block colour. In the top left corner there will be production information. In the bottom left space, there will be the other two silhouettes from the front cover. On the spine there will be 'Studded Roses' 'Ladies First' and 'SONY BMG' in that order from top to bottom.

Chosen album name: Ladies First

I chose this name for our album as I feel it reflects our ideology of being independent women. I shows that we are about putting women first rather than men. I also chose this font as I liked the idea of the album title  appearing as though it has been hand written onto the digipak. It also gives it a touch of elegance.

Development of our logo

We liked the font used in the first attempt of the band's logo, but we were unsure about the rose. We all felt that a real rose would be better than they plain, grey drawing. So I used a photo of a red rose, and cropped it down to just the rose head. This is our end result:

Our band's image!

Production Journal

In today's lesson, we all did our seperate things. I made the example eyelash packaging, whilst the others updated their blogs. Megan also continued with the storyboarding. Also, for homework I took home the storyboards Megan had done so far, so that I could colour them in. Laura's task for homework was to sketch out the outfits for our video. Beatrice for homework is putting our feedback from our questionnaires into piecharts. Megan is continuing the storyboards as her homework.

I have also made a moodboard for the band's image within our music video which will posted seperately.

Merchandising

We thought it would be a good idea to make an example of the kind of merchandise that our band would release, as well as their music. We thought eyelashes would be a good line to go down, and these will feature in our first music video. Below is the example pack I made:

Ideas for my digipak....

Production Journal

Today saw the creation of our logo! We used the same font and idea that we used in our mood board as we liked it and thought it was effective. However, in the new version we thought it would be nice to add studs into the logo. So, using photoshop, I individually added studs to the letters. I did this by getting an image of a studded belt and cropping it down to just one stud. I then had to go through a cycle of duplicating and re-duplicating the layer, until all of the letters were complete. This is the finished product:

I also took a screenshot half way through making it:

In yesterday's lesson (17/10/2011) we continued with our storyboards. We sat together as a group and wrote out the rest of the shots that would appear in our music video. Megan did some more of the drawing part of the storyboard at home, but has yet to finish these. Also, we handed out our questionnaires and received our feedback. The questionnaires are in the next post.

On Thursday 13th of October, we started on our Storyboards. We wrote a brief shot by shot list for about the first 25 shots. Megan then started to fill in the boxes on the sheet with images to illustrate what it would look like. Whilst Megan did that, me, Laura and Beatrice all worked out what would appear in the shots for the next two or three sections of the song. We listened to our song on Youtube to give us more guidance of where to cut, and to hear exactly what the song sounded like at each point. Not all of the first 25 got drawn in lesson, so Megan took this home with her to do.

Looking at a Digipak by R.Kelly

Journal - Introduction to a DigiPak

A digipak is similar to a CD case, but made mainly out of cardboard instead of plastic. There is an image referencing the artists on the front, usually with their name and the album title. There is a track list on the back and also distribution/production information, along with copyright information in small print. There is a slip inside which always contains song names and exactly who made them, along with some images. There are sometimes lyrics in these slips and also occasionally thank you messages. The digipak also has to be recognizably similar to the artist it belongs to i.e. have the same 'theme.' There is also a spine which contains usually only text, which says the artist's name, album name, and the record label.

The record label might choose one of these rather than a regular CD case because it's economically cheaper; they are also good for promo copies.

It benefits the consumer as it makes you feel like you're getting something extra.

Audience Profile for Studded Roses

Sunday 9 October 2011

Questionnaire

are making a music video for Mis-Teeq's scandalous. The idea of our video is 'the chase ' where viewers will see the four members of our girl group 'Studded Roses' dominating the males. The locations for our video include streets, a car park, car and a homemade setting. We have also decided to include a dark edge to the video to make it somewhat different from the typical pop/r'n'b music videos of nowadays.

1. Do you believe the locations we have chosen for our music video are good? Whether yes or no, explain you answer.

2. What do you feel about the theme of our video, ‘the chase’?

3. Do you feel the song we have chosen is suitable for this theme?
Yes No (explain)

4. Our target audience is people between the ages of 15-30 (particularly females). Do you think our music video will interest them?
Yes No

5. We have decided to include a dark edge to our music video. Would this appeal to youPlease explain your answer.

6. Do you feel there are any common themes in girl band’s videos (particularly that of the pop/r’n’b genre)?

7. What type of costume do you think would be suitable for this music video?

8. Is there anything you believe we should be wary of when shooting our video?

9. What would you like to see in a music video of this genre?

10. Do you have any other ideas as to other things we can include within our video?

Journal - Feedback of our pitch

On Thursday, 6th October my group and I presented our music video criteria and they in turn gave their feedback, which are the responses below.

- We may need to incorporate elements of performance within the video.
- Our idea of 'The Chase' is unlikely to last 3 minutes and it may get boring after a while.
- We should be cautious of 'The Chase' idea because it may get confusing after a while, as to who is chasing who.
- Where is the video going to be shot?
- When doing our storyboard we need to plan it out properly as to which shots will follow what
- We need to be careful that our music video does not get boring or confusing because there is only one sequence.
- There needs to be costume changes within the video, (which is essential for a girl band), the fact that there is only one sequence may make costume change difficult. Therefore, we need to consider our sequence.
- Possibly a performance in a dark, underground club scenario?
- May need to use a street near our school (due to us wanting to film the video at night and because of the lighting.
- Overall, our class liked 'The Chase' idea and the complex narrative but there needs to be more to it.

General Feedback for all:
-Need to shoot a lot of material
-Has to be a lot of variety
-There needs to be a lot of cuts to make it pacy for the audience
-Need to shoot at least three times at three different angles.

FONTS I LIKE

I decided to start researching different fonts to use both in our promotional poster and for our digipak. I thought our name might also appear during our video, so it would be good to start brainstorming. I chose  these fonts as I think they work well with our name, and also our genre. I wanted something which was slightly girly, but also quite dark and gothic.

Production Journal - Mood board

On Tuesday 27th of September we created a mood board for our music video. Our genre is pop/R'n'b, but we also wanted our video to feel kind of rocky to go with the sound of our song - 'Scandalous' by Misteeq. Our name is 'Studded roses' which shows a mix of naughty and nice. On our mood board we put pictures of artists our group will be styled similar to. This includes Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine), Taylor Momsem (of The Pretty Reckless), Amy Lee (of Evanescence) and Rihanna. We also includes stills from Rihanna's Disturbia video as we liked the feel of her video. We also included some possible settings that we liked and other things we'd like to feature in our video. Also, we included the full set of lyrics and annotated them at each stage we currently have ideas for what will appear in the video.
